About Miners Rock Shop
Miners Rock Shop grew out of family trips into the Arizona desert. The Baars staked five mining claims across the state, collected minerals themselves and sold them at rock and mineral shows, and in 2020 opened a one-room shop in Tempe. It has since spread through several rooms.
Co-owner Sonseeahray "Sonny" Baar is a miner, lapidary artist and silversmith who cuts stones from the family's claims and makes most of the jewelry in the shop herself, and she runs the business with Sam Baar. The back of the shop is open to visitors, so you can watch stones being cut and polished. The family also runs the Facet Club, where gemstones are faceted in house and students learn to do it themselves, along with classes in jewelry making and silversmithing.
For collectors there are minerals from Arizona and around the world, crystals, gemstones, geodes cracked on the spot, fossils, and a dark room of fluorescent minerals under UV light. For cutters the shop sells faceting and cabbing rough, lapidary supplies, faceting and cabbing machines, rock tumblers and rockhounding tools. Native American art bought directly from the artists, and animal paintings by the youngest member of the family, hang among the stones.
