About Arizona Association of Gold Prospectors
The Arizona Association of Gold Prospectors is a recreational gold club based in Phoenix, active since the mid-1990s. It describes itself as a family organization for prospecting, rock hunting, camping and good fellowship, open to beginners as well as experienced prospectors.
Its claims lie about an hour from Phoenix in the Wickenburg and Morristown area, where the Wickenburg and Hieroglyphic mountains meet, in the part of Maricopa County with the richest gold history. Members work the San Domingo Wash, the Little San Domingo Wash and Ox Wash in the San Domingo mining district, and the club notes that the wet years from 2018 on moved plenty of gold-bearing gravel along these washes. Each member gets a claims guide with maps and directions, so as to be sure of standing on club ground: the club reminds people that taking minerals from someone else's claim is a felony in Arizona.
Besides the claims, members have special access to a commercial placer operation near Red Picacho, where the club runs common digs that process far more gravel than picks and shovels could, along with club gold digs and a Christmas dig.
The Phoenix chapter meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month from 7 to 9 pm at the Denny's at I-17 and Dunlap Ave, except in June, July, August and December, when the meeting becomes the Christmas party. Meetings cover equipment, techniques, geology, where the gold is turning up and the laws on prospecting, and often a short talk on a mineral or gemstone with a sample for each member. The club asks visitors to call before coming to confirm the meeting.
