About Falcon Metal Detectors

Falcon Metal Detectors makes one main product, the MD20 Gold Tracker, and it is not a nugget detector in the usual sense. It is a small electronic probe: a pocket-sized control box with a sensing tip on a cable, running at 300 kHz, a very high frequency that lets it respond to specks of gold too small for an ordinary machine to notice. The company advertises it as the most sensitive gold probe available.

Prospectors use it where a search coil can't go. The tip can be pushed into cracks in bedrock, held against the walls of a vein, passed over a pan or a pile of concentrates, or worked into stream gravel. Geologists have also used it to spot pinpoints of gold in drill core, as long as the tip touches the rock. It also reacts to other metals and to black sand, so a signal still needs checking with a lens or a pan.

The trade-off is range. The probe only works at very short distances, so it is a tool for checking rock, cracks and concentrates, not for sweeping open ground. Used that way it complements a nugget detector rather than replacing one.

Falcon is based in Mesa and sells by phone and through prospecting stores; in Arizona, A&B Prospecting stocks the MD20 and its accessories in Mesa and Prescott Valley.
