About A & B Prospecting Supplies (Mesa)

A&B Prospecting Supplies started in 1979 in the garage of Frank Lynn. Two years later he moved it into a storefront in Godfrey Square, a strip mall on Main Street in Mesa, and the shop has never left that unit. It calls itself the Southwest's largest prospecting store.

Frank Lynn ran it until 1992, when he sold it to Wally and Joyce DeShon, who built a mail-order catalog that reached customers across the country. In 2005 the business passed to Ryan and Jocelyn DeShon. They took it online, kept handing out printed catalogs at trade shows, and opened a second store in Prescott Valley.

The range follows the work from dirt to metal. For finding and digging there are detectors from Minelab, Garrett, Fisher and Falcon, Keene and Royal drywashers for dry desert washes, and sluices, highbankers, dredges, pumps and hookah diving gear for wet ground, plus pans, classifiers and hand tools. For the last steps there are concentrators such as the Gold Cube, rock crushers, and assay and refining supplies: furnaces, chemicals, fireware and lab glass.

Gear from small local makers shares the shelves, among it the Falcon gold probe, made in Mesa, and RDH highbankers. Beginners get their own starter selections, one for prospectors and one for detectorists, and the shop keeps a list of books it thinks are worth reading.
