About West Valley Rock and Mineral Club

The West Valley Rock and Mineral Club began because there was no club near Buckeye: the closest ones were in Surprise and Wickenburg. A local rockhound put an ad in the newspaper to see if anyone else was interested, and it worked. The club has been finding treasures in Arizona since 2012.

Members describe themselves as rockhounds who think that searching Arizona for treasure is the greatest thing there is. Monthly field trips go after whatever the state offers: chrysocolla from the Reserve Bank Mine near the Vulture Mine at Wickenburg, fire agate from Saddle Mountain near Tonopah, wulfenite from the Red Cloud Mine. The trip rules are strict and clear: follow all laws and rules, leave no litter, don't share sites with non-members and watch out for the people above and below you on a slope.

Meetings are on the second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 pm at the Buckeye Community Veterans Services Center, 402 E Narramore Ave, downtown, and they are open to everyone.

The club's big event is the Helzarockin' Gem and Mineral Show, held every October. It began at the Buckeye Arena as part of the town's fall festival and moved to the Buckeye Equestrian and Events Center, where the 2026 show was held on October 11. Besides vendors of rocks, gems, minerals, fossils, beads, slabs and cabochons, there is gold panning, geode cracking, rock painting, an hourly silent auction and a free rock scavenger hunt for kids.
