About Jewelry & Mineral of Las Vegas
Jewelry & Mineral of Las Vegas started in 1986 as a small gallery of about 2,000 square feet that sold mostly malachite. The founder, Jean-Pierre Piron, and his family still run it from the original building on East Sahara Avenue, which has grown room by room into one of the largest rock and crystal shops in the country, with tens of thousands of square feet of retail and wholesale space.
The store imports and exports minerals, crystals, rock specimens and geodes from around the world, from tumbled stones that cost a dollar to amethyst geodes weighing tons. It advertises the world's largest crystal quartz sphere, a ball of about 12,000 pounds. Rough and polished pieces, slabs and beads fill the back rooms.
Fossils are a large part of the stock: ammonites, trilobites, fossil fish plates and slices of petrified wood are spread through several rooms, and many visitors walk through the place as if it were a free museum. Carvings, home decor and jewelry fill the rest.
The shop is two blocks east of Las Vegas Boulevard, an easy stop from the Strip, and also sells online.
