About Jim Gray's Petrified Wood Co.

Jim and Cathy Gray started what was then the Holbrook Rock Shop more than 50 years ago with little more than a pickup truck and a pile of petrified wood. The business, now Jim Gray's Petrified Wood Company, is still owned and run by the family and calls itself the world's leading dealer in Arizona rainbow petrified wood.

The wood is its own from start to finish. The company holds the mineral rights to several sections of land near Petrified Forest National Park and does its own digging, cutting and polishing, turning logs into full rounds, tabletops and bookends. That matters, because collecting inside the national park is forbidden: wood bought here comes from private ground.

Besides Arizona wood the shop sells petrified wood from around the world, fossils, meteorites, minerals, rough rock, banded onyx and sandstone, stone carvings and jewelry, and Navajo-made pottery. It stands on US 180, the road from Holbrook to the park's southern entrance, and keeps long hours, later in summer than in winter.
