About Mammoth Mine Rock Shop
Mammoth Mine Gift and Rock Shop sits on the Apache Trail in Apache Junction, with the Superstition Mountains filling the view. Its name comes from the Mammoth Mine, the gold mine at the heart of Goldfield, the 1890s mining camp a few miles farther up the same road.
It is run by Ron and Jayne Feldman. Ron is a treasure hunter who has spent much of his life on the Lost Dutchman Mine, the gold mine that the German immigrant Jacob Waltz supposedly found in the Superstitions and never revealed. He has written books on its history and appeared on many television programs about it, and hearing the legend from him is part of a visit. Jayne knows the rocks and the local area just as well and looks after the customers.
The shelves hold minerals, fossils and gemstones picked by Ron, from pieces for someone starting a first collection to specimens for serious collectors, with Arizona material among them. Children and beginners are made welcome, and questions about local rocks or about the mountains are encouraged.
