Petrified wood: where to buy

Petrified wood is wood that has turned to stone: trees buried long ago whose wood was slowly replaced by silica, often keeping the grain, the rings and even the bark. Arizona's Petrified Forest National Park is the famous example, and nothing may be taken from it.

You can collect it yourself on BLM land in reasonable amounts for personal use: up to 25 pounds a day plus one piece, and no more than 250 pounds a year, and you may not sell what you collect there. Shops sell wood dug on private land and their own claims, from small polished pieces and slabs to whole log rounds, which is the legal way to own big or showy pieces.

Ask where the wood was dug, and for a slab or a log round, whether the piece is solid or has cracks that may open when it is cut or polished.

7 shops across the US that sell petrified wood. Each one links to its own website, so you can compare them one by one.
