About Rockchuck Gem & Mineral Gallery

Rockchuck Gem & Mineral Gallery stands on Highway 95 in Schurz, at the turnoff toward Yerington, on the long road between Reno and Las Vegas. It is run by John and Chelsea Keady, who are small independent miners themselves: a good part of what they sell comes from their own digging in Nevada, alongside minerals from abroad.

The shop carries raw mineral specimens, rough rock for cutting, polished and decorative stones and cut gemstones. In the glass cases is jewelry designed and made on the premises, much of it from locally mined material. Visitors can buy geodes and crack them open right in the shop.

The owners are known for sharing what they know: prospectors who stop by trade stories with them, and they point visitors to places to go rockhounding nearby. Their website has a page of rough rock for sale, and they post about their mining and finds on Facebook and Instagram.

Hours vary, so call or message before making the detour. Schurz lies within the Walker River Paiute Reservation, where collecting rocks requires permission from the tribe.
