About Hidden Treasures Trading Company

Goldfield was the largest town in Nevada during its gold boom in the first decade of the 1900s. Today it is a small county seat on Highway 95 between Tonopah and Beatty, and a stop for anyone digging at Gemfield, four miles away. Hidden Treasures Trading Company is one of its rock shops, spread over three buildings on Bellevue Avenue.

It is run by Bryan Smalley, a local rockhound who spends much of his time out collecting and cutting stone. The shelves hold rough and specimens from the surrounding hills, including chalcedony like the material dug at Gemfield, alongside gift items. He cuts and polishes stone, and if he has the time he may cut a rock you bring in; he also knaps stone and makes flint strikers from local chalcedony.

The shop has served as a sign-in point for visitors to the Gemfield claims, where collecting is paid by the pound.

It opens on weekends, and the owner is often out in the field, so call ahead; people in Goldfield will usually know where to find him. There is no gas station in Goldfield: fill up in Tonopah or Beatty.
