About Diamond Pacific Tool Corp

Diamond Pacific, based in Barstow in the Mojave Desert, calls itself one of the major manufacturers of lapidary equipment for the rockhound hobbyist, the professional gem cutter and the jeweler, and its machines also do commercial work, from deburring metal parts to testing geological specimens and concrete for highways. Its site greets visitors as the home of the Genie, the "Magical" Gem Maker.

The Gem Makers carry a six-wheel sequence of diamond grinding and polishing wheels, so a cabochon goes from rough shape to polish on one machine. The Genie weighs 68 pounds, measures 32 by 16 by 14 inches and runs on 115 or 230 volts; with accessories it also becomes a trim saw, a jeweler's buffer, a flat lap and a way to miter the corners of gemstone boxes. Its 8-inch trim saw attachment goes on without tools in a few minutes, cuts with 5 pints of water instead of oil, and comes with a .032-inch sintered rim blade and an angle block for trimming cab edges at ten degrees. The Pixie has the same wheel sequence on 4-inch wheels, weighs under 30 pounds with its lamp, sits on a 14.5 by 18-inch base and needs no plumbing, so it works from a standard outlet in an RV; the company says opal cutters prefer it, and its trim saw, with a stainless steel table and blade guard, cuts a 5-inch slab in half. The Titan, aimed at dedicated hobbyists and professional cutters, includes a geyser for flat laps. A new Mist kit fits all the Gem Makers and plugs into the wall on its own.

The rotary tumblers follow the original Highland Park design: polyethylene barrels for 25, 40 and 65 pounds that need no liner, lids sealed with a neoprene gasket, double-pulley rollers with polyurethane-covered shafts on bronze bearings, and a 1/3 hp motor inside the base, also offered for 220-volt power abroad. The rule the company prints is to fill a barrel about three-quarters full. The Mini-Sonic vibratory tumblers work without a motor, belts, pulleys or eccentric weights, with cast plastisol hoppers in an ABS housing, and handle anything from gentle opal loads to agate and jasper. For flat work there is the benchtop 8RL lap, built for Magnetic Nova discs with a suggested run from 30 to 3,000 grit and cerium oxide on felt; the 12- and 18-inch RL flat laps with cast iron plates and steel tanks; and the Vi-Bro-Lap, whose crisscross-grooved aluminum plate flattens several geode halves or slabs at once without constant attention.

Most of the line is in the online store. Heavy machines such as the Titan, the RL flat laps and the 65T tumbler are sold by phone because of shipping restrictions, and orders can be faxed at any hour. Web orders go by UPS Ground anywhere in the country, usually in 3 to 5 business days, flat-rate packages leave on Wednesdays, and Diamond Pacific products with a manufacturing defect are exchanged for the life of the product. The store also stocks saw blades from 4 to 36 inches, Nova, Galaxy and carving wheels, grits and tools by other makers, and its documentation page explains blade choice: thin rims for costly rough and practiced hands, thicker blades for classroom use. In California, Johnson Brothers Lapidary in Orange sells the Genie, the Pixie and the Titan.
