Keysville Recreation Area (Kern River)
Public area set aside for recreational collecting
Native material: you search the natural ground on site.
Historic mining area on the lower Kern River just below Lake Isabella, managed by the BLM, where recreational gold panning is one of the listed activities, together with camping, fishing and rafting. The gold is fine, and the area is a classic of Southern California prospecting. The BLM closed it in August 2025 because of the Little Fire; campers were back by spring 2026, but check the BLM page for alerts before you go.
Make a weekend of it
157 gold spots on open public land with no claim on record, within 50 miles.
There are more on the map, some of them with a possible mining claim.

Access
From the junction of CA-178 and CA-155 in Lake Isabella, take CA-155: the Keysville South entrance (river access and camping) is about 0.6 mile on the left before the Kern River bridge, Keysville North just past the bridge. Motor vehicles on designated routes only. Dispersed camping, 14-day limit.
Technique
Pan and hand sluice at the river's edge. Suction dredges are banned in California rivers. Some mining claims exist inside the area: if you see claim markers, move on. The Kern is fast and cold: stay off it at high water and wear a life jacket near the river.
