Bay Area Mineralogists
Informal association of professional and advanced amateur mineralogists and geologists of the San Francisco Bay Area, founded in the early 1970s; most members are field collectors of mineral specimens in California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and other states. Meets at 7 PM on the second Wednesday of the month (except February, July and August); the place is given in the monthly newsletter, and the September and November 2026 meetings are at the Los Altos Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave., Los Altos, where the pin is, with a Zoom option. Talks on mineralogy, show-and-tell of field finds, help identifying unknown specimens, collecting field trips and a late-summer picnic; visitors are welcome. Affiliated with the Peninsula Gem & Geology Society, it joins the annual show with that club and the Sequoia Gem & Mineral Society in Redwood City.
Around here, the land is mostly private
Within 50 miles of Los Altos our maps show no open public land to prospect. That is exactly why a club matters here: clubs have the landowner permissions, the leases and the know-how.
Nearest open public land on our gem and mineral map: about 99 miles away.
